A social network by sleepless freaks for sleepless freaks

During a recent "Weekend Justice," I feel that I was defamed by someone.

A someone who has yet to follow me on Twitter and continues not to GIVE ME MY PRIZE for his twitter "find the missing word" request. But I digress...

But I am not bitter. No, not me. For I have joy in my heart and a spring in my step and...

No. Wait, I AM BITTER! I am bitter because I was defamed and let me share with you why.

See, I am the director for a small little Track at a local, sparsely (<-- HA!) attended sci-fi convention. Due to this duty, I pull in people to talk on a variety of subjects. Let me repeat that -- a VARIETY of subjects. And I work to treat everyone as if their time is valuable, that they are valuable and that I very much thank them for all that they do. Because, in all honesty, if it were just me and a few people (a'la very early years of any track) it's not as much fun.

So I work to try to please people in what we set up. Now, you would think with approximately 35 hours to work with over four days that wouldn't be hard. Hate to tell you but it is impossible. Im. Poss. Ible. Not difficult. Not challenging. Im-freakin-possible.

Because, see? Your average sci-fi fan and your average con-goer have very different needs in a con. There are those that are there to only see their show -- and they may number in 5 to 2500*. There are those that are there to find out info about their fandom love, fandom numbers ranging from 2 to 100.** There are those that are there to dress-up and those that are there to dress-down. There are those that are there to drink (ah...Thursday night) and those that are there to work.

And there are those that are there to because this is the place - and the only place - where their many different loves, interests and time converge.

I try to make sure that people have a good time when they come to Con. That they find things that they like to do. That includes both the attendees (those who pay) and the guests (those who attendees sit and listen to). I am a polite person - I am southern and it is in my very nature and dna. So, I treat everyone with respect and courtesy.

Even numbnuts, those who appear a bit different and strange and those who appear to be "reasonable" but are just as nuts as everyone else!

So, when my name is DEFAMED for being polite to people who have taken their time to attend and give talks on subjects -- whether any one particular person agrees or not! -- I get a bit growly. A lot growly, actually. Because whether I agree with someone or not, being polite and making sure that people I - me, myself, I - have invited somewhere are treated politely is the LEAST I can do. And I work (and have worked) to make sure that people invited not by me are treated that way as well. Because it's the right thing to do.

*growls*

Yeah, still a bit bitter and upset here. Because the point is that there should be a modicum of polite civility in our day-to-day lives, even if you disagree with someone. Perhaps ESPECIALLY when you disagree with someone.

It's a pet-peeve of mine, actually. I believe that there is a place and time for sarcasm, there is a place and time for disagreement. There are times for even over the top satire. But there is always, ALWAYS, time for being polite and professional.

I will continue to do so.

So there! NYAH, NYAH, NYAH :p~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

*5 = number in a panel room where "fan discussion is begged for!" per the e-mail and that many showed up, even giving them a primo time slot
*2500 = number of people in a main programming room for a very hot, very British show
** 100 number given to me by a fan who counted among his fandoms: ST, SW, XF, DW, old BSG, new BSG, BSG1980, each one of his individual comic loves, each one of his individual anime loves, and so on and so forth...Seriously, being nice and looking like you are paying attention sometimes equals 20 minute one-sided conversation that makes you want to spork yourself. But I was still polite, dammit. *grrrr!*
