Needcoffee.com's Gabfest - BETA

A social network by sleepless freaks for sleepless freaks

OK, so, I do have magpie tendencies. It's a sad state of affairs and I have learned to accept my weakness. This means that I often watch really cheesy sci-fi or something else by a certain actor and I enjoy it. Occassionally, it also means that due to my fandom-ness, I find really good TV.

Example: Paul Gross Love

The cheesy: I own two CDs by Paul Gross (with David Kelley). I adore them and know all the words; my hub loves me so much he put the CDs on his mp3 player so I could listen to them in his music shuffle. However, this would not be considered "good" music even by someone deaf + can't sway in time + and thinks that Bart Simpson is a good poet. If you are very good, I could upload the music to the gabfest. Although, not sure that is a reward or a punishment.

The good: Slings and Arrows miniseries is fantastic! Writing is amazing and quick and sharp. Paul plays a nutty actor who you look at and go, "Dude...you need lithium!" and it's a great look at an acting company. Plus, Shakespeare references! FTW! \o/ If you have not seen this, watch it - it's on DVD now and shows up on Bravo, Sundance and Showtime here.

See? I admit that I have loves that are both cheesy and good. I have a very zen like belief in fandom-love: You have the good and the bad and, as a fan, you love them both, albeit some you love while having a horrified expression of "Oh hell to the no, you DIDN'T!?!"

And this brings me to NCIS. In a very meandering way, through fandom (long story, not telling it now), I have started watching NCIS and enjoying it. It's fun and it's got pretty (<-- see, I admit that I can be shallow!) and it's got gothy and it's got snarky and it's just kinda fun. A step above SGA for reality and a step below...well, it's on network tv so it's a step below many things. :)

However, I have a long fandom memory and, as I watched two to three episodes, something kept twinging. A bit of a tilted head, "Huh...something's...confusing." And I figured it out.

Oh Michael Weatherly, hell to the no, you did NOT do Dark Angel.

That's the problem, right there. Dark Angel was a HIDEOUS show. Hideous. And understand that I found enjoyment in Birds of Prey so if I thought something was hideous...well...come on.

And please don't argue with me that Dark Angel was "good" or "noir" or whatever. Yeah, yeah, idea by James Cameron. Yeah, yeah, all dark vision of the future...yadda yadda yadda. Let's be honest, shall we? Dark Angel was Blade Runner (minus anything good) with a new hot young thing (Alba) which was to appeal to 18-25 year old guys (who had no date and could watch with one hand on their gaming stick).

I remember when it was out some people trying to get me to watch it. "You love sci-fi! It's sci-fi!" "It's about the future and the hero is a woman! You love the future and women!" Um...yeah, head hurts. I tried to watch it. I did. But...but...NO SENSE! None! And it was so serious and "deep."

They kept using that term "deep" - I do not think it means what they think it means.

I get that actors work for a paycheck. Yes to the check, dear actors. I applaud Lance Henriksen for all the SFOP "Sasquatch" movies. Even if he didn't need a house, I hope he cashed the checks with a smile.

It's hard to explain to my fandom head that "Yeah, okay, he did Dark Angel but that's over now" and watch the show. I say to fandom head, "Look, Mark Harmon - he died on ER [edit St. Elsewhere!] of AIDS and you aren't having any issues with that!" My fandom head pretends to listen, nods and then goes, "Isn't he supposed to have glasses on? And something about a wheelchair? And gushing over Alba's great acting ability?"

Damn fandom memory. Gotta learn how to wipe it someday. *sigh*
